why and how to make the shift to clean beauty
Clean beauty is a big buzzword these days, but what does it really mean? It means use of beauty products that are mindfully created and produced without proven or suspected toxic ingredients, so that you can use them without risking your health.
By that very definition, you can determine why making the shift to clean beauty is so important. Who wants to apply cosmetics that contain harmful ingredients with the potential to cause countless health issues? The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was passed in 1938 for the purpose of tightening controls over drugs and food but hasn’t changed much since then, even though ingredients and manufacturing processes certainly have.
However, CNN reports that a new “No PFAS in Cosmetics Act” was recently introduced in the U.S. House and Senate, following the release of a new study that found high levels of a marker for toxic PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in 52% of 231 makeup products purchased in the United States and Canada. Some of the highest levels were found in foundations (63%), waterproof mascara (82%), and long-lasting lipstick (62%), according to the study.
PFAS can bioaccumulate in bodies over time and have been linked to cancer, thyroid disease, liver damage, decreased fertility, and hormone disruption. The proposed “No PFAS in Cosmetics Act” would direct the FDA to issue a proposed rule banning the intentional addition of PFAS in cosmetics.
Ready to make the switch to clean beauty? You can do it in just two steps:
- Review this list of ingredients to avoid — PFAS is only one worrisome ingredient found in cosmetics and other personal care products — and compare with the products you have at home. Conduct an audit to determine which of your products have got to go.
- Replace toxic products strategically. It’s not necessary to ditch them all at once. Start with some of the worst offenders (deodorant and perfumes, for instance) and work your way through until all your products have been replaced with clean versions. Even swapping out a few products containing harmful ingredients will make a difference.
