Eczema is a chronic skin condition that can cause excessively dry, itchy, inflamed patches of skin. Although it’s most likely to first develop during childhood, adults can develop it, too. Unexpected or more intense flare-ups can be brought on by exposure to airborne allergens, stress and anxiety, harsh chemicals, and medications, as well as extreme seasonal changes in the weather.
Cold temperatures and harsh winds are more likely to trigger eczema than warm weather, making a fall flare-up common. The chill in the air during this time of year can cause skin to lose moisture and become dry and irritated, especially areas of the skin that aren’t well protected, like hands, cheeks, and eyelids.
Try taking these precautions this fall (and all year long!) to help limit eczema flare-ups and manage symptoms:
- Wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid fabric rubbing against irritated skin.
- Eat a healthy diet including fatty fish, apples, broccoli, and spinach.
- Avoid stress, which can play a role in inflammation, by practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing.
- Wear cotton gloves at night if you tend to scratch while sleeping.
- Wash with warm, not hot, water.
- Moisturize after every bath or shower while damp to seal in hydration and moisturize hands every time you wash.
- Avoid using products made with fragrance and dyes. Instead, use soaps, detergents, and other personal care products made with soothing, non toxic ingredients such as:
